Shanghai Dynasty

Shanghai Mahjong is a computer puzzle game derived from the traditional Mahjong game. It is sometimes also called “Mahjong Solitaire” or a “Tile Matching Game,” and it first appeared in the 1980s. Unlike traditional Mahjong, which has more complex rules, Shanghai Mahjong features relatively simple gameplay, making it popular among a wide range of players.

In this game, your objective is to clear all the tiles by matching pairs from stacks that can be up to 3 to 5 layers high. For an easier version suitable for children, start with “For Kids,” and for a more challenging standard version, choose “Shanghai.”

How to Play

Please review the following instructions for a quick understanding of how to play.

Key Features

  1. Game Rules
    • Shanghai Mahjong uses 144 Mahjong tiles. The tiles are stacked in multiple layers, and each tile has a unique pattern.
    • The objective is to find and remove matching pairs of tiles with the same pattern. Tiles can only be removed in pairs, and a tile must not be blocked on both sides or covered from above to be selectable.
    • You win the game by removing all the tiles.
  2. Tile Types
    • Number Tiles: Numbers from 1 to 9, divided into three suits (Bamboo, Dots, and Characters).
    • Wind Tiles: East, South, West, and North.
    • Dragon Tiles: Red, Green, and White.
    • Season Tiles: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.
    • Flower Tiles: Plum Blossom, Orchid, Chrysanthemum, and Bamboo.
  3. Gameplay
    • Players observe the layout of the tiles and click on available matching pairs to remove them.
    • As pairs are removed, new tiles are revealed, and the difficulty increases as the game progresses.
    • You win by clearing all tiles within the time limit. If you fail to remove all tiles, the game ends.
    • The game is also over if no more matching pairs are available.

Strategy and Tips

  • It is important to plan your moves ahead. Removing tiles randomly may leave you with no possible moves later.
  • When dealing with stacked tiles, it is best to remove tiles from the top and outer edges first.
  • Quickly identify all possible pairs and prioritize which ones to remove. Recognizing patterns and tile positions efficiently is key.

Unlike traditional Mahjong, Shanghai Mahjong features simple rules and intuitive gameplay, making it enjoyable for a wide range of players. It is a great way to stimulate the brain, improve logical thinking, and enhance planning skills. With easy access across various devices, it can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere.
